40 Metres Undergound in Naples - 25 June
We woke up at 5.45 and got ready in time for our taxi to arrive. We had to clean the apartment and make it superb, superb. And more superb! Because that’s what the rules are at this apartment. The taxi was taking us to the airport. It was busy on the road and it took over an hour to get there.
Thankfully it wasn’t busy at this airport like Luton was. We sat and waited for the flight to take us to….. Italy! Dun, dun, duuuun!
When we got onto the plane I was excited and we sat right at the back. Mummy helped me write some of my blog (which we’re doing right now, on the plane to Athens!).
We landed in Naples and got picked up by a man with his taxi car. He drove us about 25 minutes to our apartment. The roads were all paved and there was a lot of tooting going on. The car was medium sized. And when we got to our apartment there was a lady meeting us who helped us open the door and she was the lady who owned the apartment. She showed us around. It was very small. Only a bathroom, Mum& Dad’s room (which was also the lounge) and our room which was also the kitchen! Mum & Dad’s room was bigger than our room. There was food there which was breakfast, lots of juices, lots of toast spreads and rolls. Me and Finn were allowed to have a juice and everyone laughed at me because I opened one and said “this tastes a bit like tea” and Dad says “well darling, that’s because it is tea!” and I said “I thought it was lemon juice!”. It was okay, I preferred it to peppermint tea.
We headed out to a place called Napoli Underground. We paid to go and see inside. We walked 40 metres underground. It was a little bit scary and quite dark. It had 100% humidity which meant it was wet and I had to be careful not to slip. The Greeks built the tunnels and caves about 2,400 years ago! They used the tunnels to get water from Mt Vesuvius. The first skinny tunnel was 150 metres long and only 50cm wide. So everyone else had to walk on their side and they would still touch the edges. But I could walk straight and not even touch the sides of the tunnel. It was very dark and so we had to take a candle light to show the way. We went through three skinny tunnels. I thought it was very interesting and I felt like I learnt lots.
The people from long ago had to stay down there to shelter from the bombs of World War 2. We saw a bomb hanging down from one of the wells. We also saw some items that people had taken down there like a sewing machine, a toy car. They had to make toilets and showers down there. The toilets didn’t have a seat. See the photo below!
We also visited a house where they discovered an old Roman theatre inside. A grandma had been living there but she was paid to move out so more of the theatre could be discovered.
Next we walked to the Central Train Station to buy some rail passes. It took a very long to sort out. We were hungry and thirsty and there was nowhere to sit. Mum and Dad kept being told the wrong information. Me, brother, Father and Mother kept getting very stressed. After more than an hour of waiting we finally had the passes.
We walked straight outside the train station and there were some restaurants there. We went to one to have pizzas because Italy is the proper place to sell pizzas. That’s where they’re from. Finn and I both had a Margherita pizza. It was scrumptious. It was the size of a whale. It didn’t come sliced up in triangles. We had to cut it up with a knife and fork. The man who was begging us to come into his restaurant said he’d give us a 12%. So we went inside. But when we went to pay the other people in the restaurant said “what discount”. The man outside shouldn’t be saying that.
We walked home. It took us 32 minutes to get home. My feet felt like they were going to burst from all the walking we did. So near to when we were home Daddy picked me up and carried me home.
